The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. William Holman Hunt was an English artist and painter. Despite his father's objections, he sought a career as an artist, and studied art at the Royal Academy, where he met Millais and Rossetti; the three of them co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Hunt's paintings are richly colored and highly detailed; many have religious or moralistic connotations. He made several journeys to the Middle East, and painted scenes of Jerusalem. Edward Everett Ayer (Nov. 16, 1841 -- May 3, 1927), businessman, bibiliophile and collector. In 1860 he joined an overland expedition to California.
